  1. [...] After talking with Shadrach about how dogs can help people with disabilities, his mommy Kim Bloomer, coincidentally, did a special edition of her Animal Talk, Naturally! show about how an assistance dog was kicked out of Walmart. In the United States, refusing admittance of a certified service dog is illegal according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. (In Canada, we, unfortunately, do not have nationwide legislation dealing with service dogs in public places.) Please read more about this story of discrimination and see how you can help. [...]

  2. Animal Talk Naturally would like to talk with the manager of this Walmart to hear their side of the story so we get all sides in this case. We’ll let you all know if that will be possible and post their commentary here as well so you then decide where you will stand.

We hope the outcome of this situation will be:
    1. Better education for employees on the role of service dogs
    2. To bring awareness about dogs in general, and responsible ownership.

On a personal note, I’d like to see the end to Breed Specific Legislation, education on dogs in general and responsible ownership. It is also important for all of us to know more about the special role service dogs play in our society.

  3. I am an employee at Walmart, and this is actually typical for walmart. They take no responsibility in educating thier employees about many major issues that can come about. I have worked at my store for 3 years and have seen many questionable decisions during that time. I am also the owner of a ‘pitbull’ and I must say that I love my dog way more than I love my job.

  4. Hi Hannah,
Tthank you for your comments. I’m rather dismayed that Walmart will take no responsiblility in educating their employees and stopping some of this media hype nonsense on breeds, especially those in the category of “pitbull”.

I contacted them twice and offered them a rebuttal AND encouraged them to get busy with an educational program for employees on service dogs and the nature of dogs in general, especially since what they did was illegal according to the Disabilities Act. I’ve gotten no response whatsoever.

So thank you for standing up and writing your comments there, maybe if more Walmart employees did likewise the mainstream media would notice and then Walmart would have to.

Awesome that you have a pitbull too! We’d love to feature your dog if you want to send us a photo :-)

The links above at the bottom of the post of the show have a LOT of correct information on ptibulls instead of all the media hype junk.

    Kim Bloomer :-)

  5. Thanks for commenting me back, and for the e-mail. I posted a link to this site on my blog, and am hoping to gain some more support, and more signatures for the petition. If I can find a decent picture of Buddha (thats my dog) I will send it to you. But I’m not much of a photographer. The thing with walmart is they are so big they don’t have to listen. They typically use the excuse that each store is run individually to keep them out of trouble. However if the people in corporate would take some positive action, I think things could change for the positive, though I doubt it will ever happen.
